Distinctive Unit Insignia

Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width overall consisting of a gold eight-pointed escarbuncle in front of a red chevron all above a black scroll bearing the inscription WE SUPPORT WITH PRIDE in gold letters, surmounting the lower sections of the bottom three radiating spokes.

Symbolism
The escarbuncle, a symbol derived from the bracing attached to the back of the shield for added strength, and the chevron allude to the basic support mission of the organization.  The five visible fleurs-de-lis at the ends of the spokes refer to the units five battle honors earned during World War II in Italy, Rhineland and Central Europe.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 46th General Support Group on 11 February 1970.  It was redesignated for the 46th Support Group on 29 September 1976.
